What Helps With Knee Stiffness? 7 Everyday Ways to Support Better Movement

Knee stiffness can make everyday movements—from getting out of bed to climbing stairs—feel more difficult. While its causes vary, a few simple habits may help support flexibility, mobility and daily comfort.

    1. Start with gentle movement

After sitting or sleeping, begin with slow knee bends or a short walk. Gentle movement helps warm up the surrounding muscles without placing sudden strain on the joint.

    2. Keep moving throughout the day

Long periods of inactivity can make stiffness feel more noticeable. Break up sitting time with brief walks or light movement—even five or ten minutes at a time can be beneficial. The CDC recommends joint-friendly activities such as walking, cycling, swimming and tai chi.

    3. Strengthen the supporting muscles

Strong thigh, hamstring and glute muscles help support the knee and absorb some of the load placed on it. Begin with comfortable, controlled exercises and increase gradually. A physiotherapist can help create a programme suited to your needs.

    4. Stretch when your muscles are warm

Gentle stretches for the thighs, hamstrings and calves may help maintain flexibility and range of motion. Avoid bouncing or forcing a stretch, and stop if you feel sharp pain. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends warming up before stretching or strengthening exercises.

    5. Choose low-impact activities

Swimming, cycling and walking on even surfaces can keep you active with less impact on the knees. Start slowly and pay attention to how your body responds.

    6. Try warm or cold therapy

Warmth may feel soothing when your knee is stiff, while a wrapped cold pack can be helpful when discomfort follows activity or swelling is present. Never apply extreme heat or ice directly to the skin.

    7. Maintain a knee-friendly routine

Regular movement, supportive footwear, adequate rest and maintaining a healthy weight can all contribute to better knee comfort. Consistency matters more than doing too much at once.

Knee stiffness should not simply be ignored. Seek medical advice if it persists, worsens or affects your daily activities. Get urgent help if your knee is badly swollen, changes shape, becomes hot and red, locks or gives way, or if you cannot move it or bear weight. See the NHS knee-pain guidance for more information.
